Whanganui Artist Open Studio

The 9th Annual Whanganui Artist Open Studio Weekends!

The Whanganui region is set to host the biggest Whanganui Artist Open Studios ever with over 60 artist and arts collectives throwing open their doors to the public in a cultural extravaganza March 21, 22 & 28, 29.

This year we proudly unveil our new look re-branding and we are ready to showcase and celebrate the wide range of genres, crafts and art styles ranging from the conventional through to the avant guarde and experimental.

Also we are presenting a sampler show to help you plan your route around the event. The sampler show will be held at 86 Taupo Quay, Wanganui from 10am – 4pm both weekends.

Wanganui Arts Society Annual Exhibition 20th - 29th March 2009

This annual exhibition is to held in Autumn this year, as the people who set up the Arts Society in 1901 did. With exhibiting in March this gives the Society the opportunity to be involved in the Whanganui Open Artists Studio event, making it a perfect time.

The Society invites all members and other interested ‘arty farty’s’ in the Wanganui, South Taranaki and Manawatu district to submit up to four pieces of work for this exhibition, entry forms can be downloaded from www.wanganuiartsociety.co.nz ASAP.

There is a 1st, 2nd and 3rd cash prizes, also merit awards selected by local judges.

IMPORTANT DATES:
Saturday 14th March: Artwork is to be dropped off at the Arts Society studio between 10am-3pm, Trafalgar Place, Cooks Gardens or artworks can be posted to P.O.Box 7256, Mid Avenue between the 10th–14th of March.
Friday 20th March: 6pm Opening and award ceremony of the exhibition, at the Community Arts Centre, 19 Taupo Quay.
Saturday 21st—29th March: The Wanganui Arts Society Annual Exhibition, 10am—4pm daily.
Sunday 29th March: All selected and non-selected artwork is to be picked up between 4-5pm at the Community Arts Centre, 19 Taupo Quay & the Arts Society rooms.

Over Xposure Exhibition

Slightly Risqué Paintings & Photographic Exhibition

Opens for Viewing Sunday 21st Dec 2pm at Mangaweka Gallery on SH1.

Over Xposure is an exhibition of paintings and photographic works with a fun yet slightly risqué edge to the works. Here we present four excellent artists, Rudyard Yap, Laura Richards, Mark Curtis, and David Bang. With two artists working in photography, two with paint and pastel, and two using exotic male models, with the other two representing the beauty of the female form, all tastes, styles and preferences are catered for! As with similar previous exhibitions, this work will be displayed in the private "back room" and though there is nothing here that is truly offensive, we do recommend viewers enter with an open mind, and suggest to parents an R18 viewing restriction. So don't be shy, come take a look !

Rayner Brother Gallery

The last exhibition for 2008 features wood-fired ceramics by Dunedin artist Brian Wood. Brian was the first recipient of the Doreen Blumhardt Scholarship, established to assist younger artists who wish to further their understanding of ceramic building and glaze techniques. Fortunately for us Brian chose to come to Wanganui recently for an 8-week ‘residency’ with one of our potting masters, Ross-Mitchell-Anyon. These works were all made during his time here.

Also joined by Mike Marsh, an artist who has just completed his third year at Wanganui UCOL School of Fine Arts, majoring in painting. Some of these large acrylic paintings were part of his end of year installation which also included life-sized painted cut-outs of a fictitious band whose members were all Mike in various guises. (check these out at UCOL’s Edith Gallery over summer).

Lisa Ormsby
Otorohanga Artist

One morning in 2001 Lisa woke to a burning desire to practice art on a fulltime basis, a desire she is thankful she acted upon, as with everyday the passion to create art grows stronger.

For Lisa the main ingredient in her paintings is the use of colour, the power and energy, weaving together stirring up feelings and emotions for the viewer. She uses bold colour in my mainly contemporary works, which reflect nature, and also have a strong indigenous feel to them.

Lisa is married with 4 children, who share her love of art and together they enjoy creating art along side each other.
