Textile and Glass

I am a multi-media artist working predominantly in felt and textiles. In this work I make garments, wall hangings and 3 D objects. My work has three continuous elements - colour, texture and surface decoration.
The satisfaction of exploring creation through design, and applying those designs to artworks motivates me every day. Along side my art work I tutor a class through CES in Wanganui and host ‘Open Days’ in my studio. I look forward to meeting you either in one of my classes or if you are interested in purchasing a piece of my original artwork!

A few questions I asked Elysabeth...
What process do you tend to follow when creating a new piece of art?
I tend to get my best ideas when I am lying down, I have a nanny nap- don't really sleep but when I am lying down , I can start to see new work , solve any issues I am having and get inspired all over again . I keep a book and pencil beside my bed . Another time for creation is very early in the morning, I might wake up any time between 2am to 4am. Have a cuppa at the kitchen table and here comes ideas popping in my head- I always have a book and pencil at the table.
What professional and personal obstacles have you overcome to get where you are today?
I come from a difficult and hurtful childhood, that ACC will pay me for the rest of my life. These issues stopped me for many years being able to commit to myself and spend a lot of energy committing to others. Opportunity to change this pattern came along about 10 years ago, after several car crashers (none of them my fault) and I was able to start the process of self care and the possibility of doing and living an authentic life in myself and following my passions. Which for me since a child has always been to ability to create.
One of my accidents resulted in having a major back operation, this will always have a impact on my energy and physical activities. But It is no excuse for not moving forward, and I am always looking for new ways to alleviate some of the physicality in the processes I use in creating my work.
How do you spend your time outside the studio, including hobbies, interests, sports, family?
I love to dance as this helps my body and mind to stay flexible. Not a fitness freak, but movement is a way for me to let go of stuff that no longer serves me. The book 'Sweat your Prayers' is what myself and another friend are working though at present. Its bringing up some interesting stuff and helping me to recognize patterns I have that have influenced my thinking processes. Self discovery is a ongoing and vital part of me.
